Women’s Fisheries Network
The Women’s Fisheries Network was founded in 1983 to provide women in fisheries-related businesses with an opportunity to exchange information and develop professional contacts. Eventually, chapters in Alaska, California, and the Northeast had members representing all sectors of the seafood industry. At the time of WFN’s founding, women were increasingly joining the workforce, but faced challenges in entering markets, obtaining commercial loans, government contracts, and management assistance. Networking was intentionally goal-oriented—opening doors, sharing experiences, providing moral support, communicating, and building a community of working women.
